During this time Wollstonecraft became active with Dissenters (also known as Nonconformists), liberal Protestants who did not conform to the rules of the Church of England. In Thoughts on the Education of Daughters: With Reflections on Female Conduct, in the More Important Duties of Life (1787), she argued for the importance of educating girls. In 1784 she founded a girls’ school in London, though it closed after several years. Backgroundįor much of her adult life, the self-educated Wollstonecraft was an advocate for social and educational equality for women. The work argues for the empowerment of women in education, politics, society, and marriage.
